Storing Your Kiln Dried Firewood

Kiln dried wood is undoubtedly the best choice of fuel for your fireplace or wood burner - it dries the wood from the inside out, removing more moisture than any other process. Because of this, kiln dried wood is up to 20% drier than other woods and so produces more heat for your fire, more efficiently and at a lower cost!

The good news is that as a result of this it's also less vulnerable than other dried wood when exposed to rain, however it's still important to store the wood properly in order to maximise its shelf life. The best solution is to keep them inside and covered up, so that they are not exposed to the elements or moisture from rain or snow.

An outside barn or shed makes a good place to store your wood - you may wish to purchase and erect a wood storage shed designed specifically for this purpose. Once you have created this space you need to decide what to put the logs in - crates and purpose-built wood stores are probably the best solution for this as they allow you to make the most of the space you have.

Logs Direct stock a selection of crates for this purpose, such as their log wood store which can be found here. To keep them even better protected cover them with a layer of tarpaulin. You may wish to use dumpy bags as an alternative to wood stores or crates however these tend to be a less effective use of your space.

If storing them inside is not possible, for instance if you don't have the room, then it is possible to keep them outside as long as you do it properly. Keep them completely covered with tarpaulin and make sure that you keep them off the ground as too much moisture can cause them to go soggy or start to rot. Of course, if it is dry and sunny then they will do perfectly fine without these measures!

Making sure that you look after your kiln dried wood correctly is the best way to make sure it lasts as long as possible - and to make the most of its excellent properties for your fireplace.
